The Contemporary Resort in Black and White

The Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World in Black and White

A black and white photo of the Fantasia gift shop in the Grand Canyon Concourse of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World.

I don’t post black and white photos all that often, because they really aren’t my style. Recently, a friend had invited me to post five black and white photos, and I politely declined. I just don’t see things in black and white, apparently. When I try to convert a photo to black and white, I usually think, “I actually like the color version much better.” And then I undo the conversion and bump up the color saturation. Nothing against those who do share black and white photos, because there are lots of good ones out there. It just isn’t me, normally.

However, I did think that this photo would be a good candidate for the black and white treatment. The great amounts of natural light coming from the large window and skylights really lit the area up in an indirect sort of way. And the large Mickey Mouse shape at the entrance to the shop looks neat silhouetted against the other areas. Plus, the lack of colors brings out all of the straight lines here, and once again the curves of Mickey stand out against those lines.

I didn’t like the Fantasia shop when they built it out in the middle of what used to be a nice, wide-open space, but it does look nice in photos, so I guess I can’t complain about it all that much.

Two Disney resort photos in two days? That hasn’t happened in a while around here, has it?
