Fly Me to the Moon

A rocket to the moon is the latest entry from Steve’s Sketchbook.

I have always liked space-related things, going back as long as I can remember. Maybe that even goes back to when I was born. The astronauts of Apollo 14 returned to earth just a few days before I was born. Of course, I don’t have any clear memories of the Apollo missions, because they ended when I was still quite young.

However, I do have many clear memories of the Space Shuttle missions. I remember all of us going into one classroom at school to watch the landing of the very first Space Shuttle flight. Those were some great times with lots of exploration and discovery, even if all of it was done while orbiting the earth.

We also enjoyed visiting Kennedy Space Center last year to feel even closer to the space program, at least as close as us non-space people can get. It was so fun to see some of the past and future space vehicles up close.

It is exciting to me to keep up with the new push to send people to the moon, Mars, and maybe even beyond. It will be interesting to see if all of that leads to another time of great technological innovation, even greater than what we have had in the last several years.

Staying Home

As exciting as the space program is to me, I am perfectly content to stay right here on the earth. For now.

Maybe one of these days space travel will become as common as air travel. It might even be possible sometime in the future for regular people like us to travel into space to see the entire earth from a distance.

Will that happen during my lifetime? Who knows. Will I go if it does? Who knows.

But in the meantime, I am perfectly happy right here on the earth. Things may not be perfect here, and as with everything, there is always room for improvement. But we can still live here just fine without requiring any special equipment or protective suits. Yes, right now it is best to wear a mask to protect yourself from a virus, but we still have it pretty good here. While it would be fun to travel in space, I think I would prefer to live right here where we are.

The earth is a pretty good place. We can work to make it even better, especially in how we treat each other, but it is still a great place to live.

About the Artwork

I really did not know what to do for my next Steve’s Sketchbook artwork. But then a fleeting thought ran through my mind, “Draw a spaceship!” So I did. Yes, the new designs for a rocket to the moon do not necessarily look like this. But that is the thing that comes to my mind when I think of a rocket to the moon. Maybe it was based on all of those cartoons I watched as a kid.

I actually did not originally plan to include the moon in this. But there ended up being more dead space than I had planned on in the lower right corner. That ended up being the perfect place to include the moon, or at least part of it. I was really happy with how the moon turned out here. And I liked the “metallic” look of the rocket, too. This one was a lot of fun to do!

However, the moon ended up going right where I would normally sign my name. So I signed it in the upper right corner instead. That’s allowable, right? Hopefully, I did not break some sort of artist’s code by doing that!
