Old Photo: Glass Beach at Kauaʻi

Beach Memories

A look across the lava rocks and sand at Glass Beach on the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaiʻi from our visit there in 2018 is the latest in the Old Photos series.

This photo is not quite as old as some of the other photos in the Old Photos series. And in some ways, three years is not all that long ago. But in other ways, it almost seems like a lifetime ago, especially with all that we have been through in the past year or so.

I do still have fond memories of our visit to Glass Beach, wandering along the shore, letting the waves wash up on our feet, finding bits of glass among the sand and lava rocks. This beach visit came right at the end of our Kauaʻi trip, and it was a great way to wind things up.

See more from our trip in the 2018 Kauaʻi Trip Report.

Once in a Lifetime?

Without a doubt, Kauaʻi was one of the most beautiful places that we have ever visited. It definitely earns its title of the Garden Island, because everything was so lush and green. But then there were beautiful beaches like this, too. You canʻt see much green in this view, but this beach definitely fits in the Garden Island. And besides, there was lots of green right around the corner, and even just behind me as I took this photo.

Maybe we will make it back there one of these days. Or maybe to some other of the Hawaiian Islands. Or maybe we won’t. Who knows what the future holds? Was this one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips? Either way, I am glad that we had that experience. I am glad that we have the memories. And I am glad that I got to make those memories with my favorite person, too.

If we never get to go back there, we will keep on making memories in whatever we do. I try my best not to complain just because where we are is not necessarily where I want to be. I just try to find something to enjoy wherever we are, whatever we are doing.

Instead of just looking for once-in-a-lifetime experiences, enjoy the everyday experiences, too. Because life is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Bible Verse

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” - James 4:13-15

About the Photo

As you might imagine, this photo was pretty good to start with. But I used Luminar AI to make it even clearer and brighter. That makes it even happier, in my opinion. I also increased the color saturation slightly, especially in the blue of the sky. I do love a good, blue sky, after all.

All you need now is a little wind and some salt water gently spraying on your face, and it almost feels like being there. At least maybe a little.
