Ocean Waves at Sunset
An Artistic View
Ocean waves roll in as light clouds fill the sky at sunset in this newest digital painting.
Whenever we are at the beach, I always enjoy watching the ocean waves. They are in constant motion, always rolling, some big, some small. Sometimes there is a break between waves, but the water is still moving. So what better way to capture those waves than with a still painting?
But seriously, I did want to try to capture the general feel and atmosphere of the waves here. This obviously is not photo realistic, because that is what photos are for. This is more impressionistic, to give the impression of the waves.
In many ways, there is no real focus here, just a collection of colors in vague shapes, similar to the colors and shapes that you would see in the ocean waves at the beach.
Background from a Background
I actually had the idea to do this painting after I painted the background for the Happy Tiki by the Waves. I liked the feel of those waves in the background, so I decided to do something similar, yet different. After all, waves never look the same, so why should paintings of waves look the same?
Do not be surprised if I do more of these in the future, because I have enjoyed this one and the tiki background, too. Keep watching Steve’s Sketchbook for more!
Bible Verse
And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” - Matthew 8:26-27
About the Artwork
When I started this, I did not have a specific idea in my mind. Perhaps that is why it does not look like specific waves. I started with a blank canvas in the Procreate app on my iPad, and I just started adding colors. Blue for the water. Red, orange, and blue for the sky. White for the waves. White, pink, and orange for the clouds. And then some white highlights here and there for more of the waves.
I was just making it up as I went, based on the ocean waves we had seen a few weeks before, as well as on other trips. Hopefully, it reminds you of some of your beach visits, too.
