A Day of Presidents and Birth

Happy President’s Day! Which is mainly just a concocted holiday in between the birthdays of Presidents Lincoln and Washington, or in other words a way for some people to get a Monday off of work. Looks like it worked for a lot of people, too.

I sometimes wonder how some of these historical figures might feel about having their birthdays celebrated as holidays. Some of them might like it, others might not. And how would Washington and Lincoln feel about having to share the spotlight on one day? Maybe Washington would give Lincoln a genuine set of Real Wood Washington Teeth, and Lincoln would give Washington a set of Lincoln Logs. Just a guess. Let’s take a look at the calendar, shall we? Birthday Calendar-1200 Hello! What’s this? Steve’s Birthday? I wonder how he feels about sharing his birthday with two other guys who don’t actually have birthdays on this day? Well actually, he doesn’t mind at all. Although he does hope that everyone knows that Washington’s birthday is actually the 22nd and not the 15th like this calendar shows.

So anyway, switching back to the first person here. Yes, I have finally made it to that great milestone that is Two Score and Five. Which is not 25 as you might think, but because a score is 20 (although in what sport one score is 20, I am not sure), I have just completed my 45th trip around the sun. Forty-five years old. The 20th anniversary of my 25th birthday. Halfway to 90. One third of the way to 135. One quarter of the way to 180, although that is very unlikely, I’m thinking.

This past year that just ended has been an interesting one. There were lots of trips, several of which got lumped into what I affectionately call the Burnsland World Tour. I also got to take my first ambulance ride, which isn’t all that it is cracked up to be. Or at least it wasn’t for me. And then at the very end of the year (which was actually the first of this year, but we are talking about my year, not the calendar year), I started writing the Steve’s Photography Tips posts, which have greatly increased the traffic around here. Wish I had known that would happen, and I would have started on that sooner. Oh, and Laura and I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary while I was 44, which means that I have now been married for more than half of my life. So that’s cool!

Who knows what lies ahead for the next 12 months? Certainly I don’t. There isn’t another grand world tour planned, but that’s okay. And sometimes some of the best things are the unplanned things, too. So I will just sit back and wait to see what comes next, while doing what I can to make this little part of the world a better place.

So whether you are celebrating President’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Presidents Day, Steve’s Birthday, or nothing at all, I am glad that you spent just a little bit of your day reading this. Thanks! Day of Presidents and Birth-1200 Let no one despise your youth… Oops, wrong verse.

That one from 1 Timothy 4 might not apply any more. Let’s try that again.

Don’t discard me in my old age; as my strength fails, do not abandon me. - Psalm 71:9

Well that’s almost a little morbid, isn’t it?

The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair. - Proverbs 20:29

Um, hair? What little I have might be gray, I guess. One more try.

Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. - Titus 2:2

Okay, that one will work!
